The Research Federation Visual Sciences and Cultures (RF VSC) aims to advance interdisciplinary research around three major axes:
- The visual forms of knowledge transmission, using digital technologies;
- The enhancement of cultural heritage, in both its tangible and intangible dimensions;
- Digital devices for scientific and artistic mediation.
This work, conducted in collaboration with research laboratories, relies on interdisciplinarity, advanced digital technologies, and partnerships with businesses in the cultural and creative industries to amplify the impact of research.
The Field of the Cloth of Gold
A long term project
The project aims to create a sensory 3D immersive experience of the spectacular meeting between two Renaissance courts. It recreates in three dimensions the encounter between King Francis I of France and King Henry VIII of England, which took place from June 7 to 24, 1520. Based on historical manuscripts, the project involves modeling infrastructures and reconstructing textiles, food, and sound elements from the banquet at the Field of the Cloth of Gold.

This study aims to determine whether the facilitation of tactile stimulation applied to the body by a visual stimulus located in peripersonal space is better predicted by the spatial proximity of the stimulus or by the delay before impact. To this end, participants are asked to perform a tactile detection task in a virtual environment.

Impact of social anxiety and tendencies toward ownership on space-ownership interaction: An eye-tracking and behavioral analysis.
The main objective of this study is to examine the behavioral and eye-tracking responses of healthy adult participants when interacting with virtual objects presented in peripersonal and extrapersonal space, depending on whether the objects belong to themselves or others (object ownership).

This project aims to study linguistic and cognitive restructuring in the bilingual mind, focusing on how speakers of different languages - with or without pathologies - describe and conceptualize events.

This research focuses on the lexico-semantic skills of school-aged children, both with and without developmental language disorders. It aims to better understand the functioning of lexico-semantic processes in children aged 5 to 10 with developmental language disorders.

Experiments as part of the PhD thesis in language sciences: "Spatial language and cognition in French, English, and German: Typological and experimental perspectives on the representation of dynamic motion events."
This is a comparative study of French, English, and German, with an experimental protocol that includes three categorization tasks using eye-tracking and an oral production task.

Rhythm, Neural Entrainment, and Speech Production (Rythep).
The goal of this project, which is part of the ANR EntrainPark project (ANR-21-CE28-0011), is to study how the perception of rhythm - both at the behavioral and neurocognitive levels - might impact speech production. The project focuses on the effect of prior exposure to rhythmic stimuli on speech production.

When a robot talks about its emotions: An event-related potential study on human neurological reactions to artificial social agents.
The aim of this exploratory study is to investigate the neural reactions triggered in humans when listening to incongruous speech delivered by a robot. The incongruity will stem from the robot’s physical form, which makes it impossible for it to perform certain actions it describes. This will be measured using an EEG study focusing on the N400 component of event-related potentials.

The study aims to determine the specific impact of performative arts (theater, dance, music) on the audience compared to mimetic arts (cinema, painting, literature). Given that performative arts involve a live performance in the presence of both actors and spectators, the question arises: to what extent do performative works - those created in front of an audience - have a different impact on the public than mimetic works, which are pre-existing creations?

Visual exploration strategies and emotional regulation in individuals highly sensitive to social rejection.
Evaluation of attentional processes and regulation mechanisms involved in a social rejection task.
This study aims to investigate the visual exploration processes of a set of neutral social situations involving rejection or acceptance among individuals highly sensitive to rejection. Additionally, it seeks to examine the emotional regulation processes in response to rejection scenarios in the same population.

The goal is to test the hypothesis that changes in brain oxygenation will be more pronounced when participants engage with an audiobook or in silence, compared to exposure to asynchronous music. The results will highlight the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the well-documented ergogenic and health effects of music.

MADISON
The MADISON study aims to determine the impact that incarceration has had, and continues to have, on the literary activity of Spanish-speaking authors. This exploratory study combines digital humanities and behavioral analysis. It draws inspiration from the practices of genetic criticism in literature: Since the 1970s, genetic criticism has focused on studying the creative processes of artists through their drafts (institutionalized by the Institut des Textes et Manuscrits Modernes in Paris). However, observing a writer in the act of writing is complex and challenging. Despite questions raised by some researchers from the ITEM (Institut des Textes et Manuscrits Modernes) about this issue, no scientific study has yet attempted to place a writer in a writing situation to evaluate their creativity.

Summary: Healthy young adults will perform a computer-based attention task at an adjustable-height desk, either in a low or high position, under three conditions:
- Sitting condition,
- Standing condition while leaning on the desk to avoid postural sway,
- Standing condition without leaning on the desk to study the impact of postural sway on performance.

Linguistic and cognitive processing in second and third language learning.
This study focuses on the verbal and non-verbal behavior of monolingual, bilingual, and trilingual individuals. Its aim is to identify the factors that influence speakers' linguistic and cognitive performance. To achieve this, we record participants' verbal productions, as well as their choices, reaction times, and eye movements while they complete various computer-based tasks.

Annotation of a simplified corpus with eye-tracking indicators for automatic prediction of these indicators.
Text simplification involves reducing the complexity of texts to make them more understandable for a specific audience. This project focuses on medical texts in French. Detecting difficult words and passages is a crucial step, as it defines the linguistic phenomena to consider during simplification. We propose using eye-tracking methods, which record eye movements during reading and provide objective indicators of reading and comprehension difficulties. These results will enable us to develop algorithms for the automatic prediction of eye-tracking indicators, leveraging NLP and AI methods.
