COMET
The COMET project under the PEPR ICCARE programme
THE PEPR ICCARE
The cultural and creative industries (CCI) are a key sector for France’s economic, artistic and technological influence. To support their transformation in the digital age, the Government has launched a national acceleration strategy, of which the PEPR ICCARE forms the research component. Led by the CNRS, this programme has a budget of €25 million over six years (2022–2028).
ICCARE aims to strengthen links between research in the humanities, social sciences and digital sciences, and stakeholders in the arts and the CCI. The aim is to develop projects that are jointly designed, implemented and promoted, addressing major cultural, economic, technological and societal challenges.
The programme is structured around seven complementary projects, each addressing specific issues, with their own calls for proposals open to the scientific, artistic, cultural and entrepreneurial communities.

THE COMET PROJECT — Designs and Uses of Metaverse Environments
One of the flagship projects of the PEPR ICCARE programme, COMET – coordinated by Yann Coello – aims to drive scientific and technological advances in interactive virtual spaces within metaverses by bringing together researchers, artists and entrepreneurs from the cultural and creative industries.
The COMET project focuses on:
- Improving interoperability and computing technologies whilst addressing energy-related challenges,
- Creating realistic, immersive and multisensory content,
- Developing systems that facilitate natural and intuitive interactions,
- Designing avatars with advanced social skills.
The COMET project also aims to explore the cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes brought about by these environments, whilst addressing the regulatory and ethical issues associated with their use. Its concrete actions include:
- Calls for proposals (small-scale projects, artist residencies, co-funded doctoral contracts);
- Acceleration days bringing together researchers, cultural and creative industries professionals and artists;
- Technical training (photogrammetry, 3D, etc.);
- Production of collaborative works and their promotion to the public.
